Meet the New Restaurants on Old Ellicott City's Main Street

October 8, 2026

For years, Nathan Sowers was a baker at Tersiguel's. After school, he brought his children to the restaurant to sit down for the staff family meal. Today the building at 8293 Main St. is his restaurant. River House on Main moved into the old Tersiguel's space in the summer of 2026.

That move sets the pattern for Main Street this year. The two biggest changes on the street both came from people who were already part of it. A former Tersiguel's baker took over the most storied dining room in town. The owner of The Wine Bin opened a cocktail bar and restaurant a short walk from his shop. The rest of the year has been filled in by smaller shops, a café's departure and a few openings that haven't happened yet.

The building changed hands, and the bread stayed

Tersiguel's was part of old Ellicott City for 50 years. Fernand and Odette Tersiguel opened it as Chez Fernand in 1975, and their son Michel later took over the kitchen. The restaurant announced in October 2025 that it would close that December. The Banner reported in mid-December that its last meal was set for Dec. 20, 2025. In the closing weeks, The Banner reported that few reservations in town were harder to get.

Michel Tersiguel told The Banner about the long hours he had worked over the years. The same story described the business pressures of recent years, including tariffs and the rising cost of doing business.

The building itself was once the home of Ellicott City's first mayor. The Banner's December story already named River House Pizza Co. as the next tenant. One longtime diner, Brian Schwenk, told the paper that knowing Sowers was taking over made him confident the new place would last. "I wouldn't be surprised if he has a 50-year anniversary," he said.

By July 9, 2026, Columbia Scoop reported that River House was in the second week of a soft opening at 8293 Main St. The restaurant describes its menu as artisan pizza and house-made bread alongside French- and Italian-inspired bistro dishes. It serves lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, with cocktails and wine. You can book through Resy under River House on Main.

The soft-opening hours were posted as follows:

  • Wednesday through Friday: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Sunday: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Those hours were for the opening period, so check the restaurant's site or reservation page before you plan a fall brunch around them.

Vesper grew out of a shop down the street

Dave Carney has run The Wine Bin on Main Street for years. He told The Banner he had wanted to open something else on the street for a long time. Vesper at Pike & Main is in the former Pure Wine site at 8210 Main St., and Washington, D.C., chef Rachel Bindel runs the kitchen. In July, the Baltimore Business Journal reported that it had opened.

Carney was clear that he didn't want a second wine bar. "I didn't want it to be a wine bar — I didn't want to be pigeonholed," he told The Banner. He described the new spot as "all about fabulous food, wine and cocktails." The April preview said the plan was dinner Wednesday through Sunday, with Sunday starting earlier for brunch specials.

The Ellicott City Partnership named Vesper its August 2026 Merchant of the Month, and the profile adds a few details:

"We have a very cool, very limited menu, but it's very well thought out and hits all the little boxes that needs t to be hit from some vegetarian, some fish, some seafood, gluten free."

Carney said in that interview that the menu changes every couple of weeks. The swordfish was the dish he was most excited about at the time. He called the kitchen "microscopically small." He also said the patio is, in his view, the best outdoor dining in Ellicott City, with the best view.

Vesper ties back to the street the same way River House does. Carney said both of his businesses regularly support Voices for Children, a children's charity whose office is two doors down from The Wine Bin.

Smaller changes up and down the street

Not every change this year had a long backstory. Lucky Lane Interiors opened at 8133 Main St. on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2026. It sells curated home décor and gifts and offers personalized decorating services. If you've been looking for a host gift or a new pillow for the porch before the holidays, it's a nearby option.

Le Jardin Rosé Bistro & Cafe went the other way. It opened at 8006 Main St. in October 2025. In March 2026, it announced it would leave that storefront at the end of the month and reopen somewhere else. The owners didn't say where or when. As of early October, we haven't found an announcement of a new location or of a new tenant at 8006 Main St.

Coming soon, and how soon

Two pizza places have been announced but not confirmed open. One is on a side street off Main. The other is out on Route 40, in the space River House left behind.

Hot Garbage Pizza is planned for 8069 Tiber Alley. In August, Baltimore Fishbowl reported that owner Geoff Gill was aiming for an early-September opening. The plan was to start with five pizzas and drinks, including beer and wine to go. The restaurant's own homepage still says "Coming Soon!" The Partnership's directory does list hours, but we haven't seen confirmation that the doors have opened.

When River House moved to Main Street, it left its spot in the Forest Green Shopping Center, at 10039 Baltimore National Pike. Angeli's Pizzeria, based in Little Italy, is taking that 1,500-square-foot space. It plans to serve pizza, calzones, meatball subs, salads and sandwiches. WBAL reported in July that this will be the first Angeli's outside Baltimore City. The owner said then that he expected to open within two months. JMORE's Aug. 18 column described it as a restaurant that will open, and we haven't seen an opening announcement since.

Here is where each change stood as of early October 2026:

Business Address Status as of early October 2026
River House on Main 8293 Main St. Open; soft opening began early July
Vesper at Pike & Main 8210 Main St. Open since summer
Lucky Lane Interiors 8133 Main St. Open since March 17
Le Jardin Rosé Formerly 8006 Main St. Left at the end of March; new location not announced
Hot Garbage Pizza 8069 Tiber Alley Targeted early September; website still says "Coming Soon!"
Angeli's Pizzeria 10039 Baltimore National Pike Announced in July; opening not confirmed

Dates on the Main Street calendar

The Partnership and the merchants have kept the street busy this fall. The Main Street Music Fest ran from noon to 8 p.m. on Sept. 19. It had food trucks, artisan vendors and the Kelly Bell Band. Wizarding Weekend on Magical Main started at 11 a.m. on Saturday and finishes its second day today, Oct. 4. Several Main Street businesses organized it with the National Federation of the Blind, and it includes themed activities, performances, a costume contest and specials at participating shops.

Here's what the Ellicott City Partnership has listed for the rest of the year. All three listings say more details are coming:

  1. Trick or Treat on Main Street: Saturday, Oct. 31, at 4 p.m.
  2. Small Business Saturday: Nov. 28, at 1 p.m.
  3. Midnight Madness on Main Street: Dec. 4, at 6 p.m.

Small Business Saturday will be the first holiday shopping weekend for Lucky Lane in its new storefront. It's also the first holiday season with brunch at River House on Main in the old Tersiguel's dining rooms, so it's a good time to try a couple of this year's additions.
